The upstream oil industry of the North East African state of Eritrea which gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1993, is one of the developing areas of the country’s economy.

The downstream oil industry of Eritrea is also an important sector in the country’s economy. The Assab refinery, jointly operated by the Ethiopian Petroleum Corp, supplies 200 000 tons per annum of its output of refined product for local consumption.

A number of management consulting and accounting practices provide support and project services to the oil industry including Ernst and Young and MBendi Information Services, who author this MBendi AfroPaedia web site and have assisted a number of multinational and African oil companies with the development of market surveys and business strategies.
