Société Nigerienne de Charbon d’Anour-Araren (SONICHAR) operates the Anour Araren opencast coal operation in the western parts of Air Massif in north central Niger. Coal quality is low, but suitable for on site power generation for use on nearby uranium mines. The mine has reserves estimated at 9.1 Mt, producing 18,291 t of coal in 2002. Niger’s total coal resources have been estimated at containing 13.7 Mt of coal.
