Overview
Diamonds have been produced in Gabon, with production peaking at 50 000ct in the 1940’s. Very little modern exploration has taken place over the 100 000 km2 where diamonds are known to occur. Most of this production came from Makongonio, in the south near the border with Congo. Some isolated occurrences have also been mentioned near the north of the country in the Mitzic region (northern Gabon). The Makongonio site is the object of extensive investigation by COGEMAT, in particular using geochemical methods. A small artisanal production exists, but its extent is not known. Southern Era is actively exploring for diamond deposits in Gabon. Work has continued on the company’s three concessions to identify and sample the source area for the active alluvial diamond mining area.
