Overview
In 2002 Kenya had an estimated gold production of 1,477 kg compared to 1,545 kg in 2001. Several foreign companies have exploration programs focusing on the western and southwestern parts of Kenya, close to the Tanzania border.
Tanganyika Gold has outlined an initial gold resource at the Migori project, but has suspended activities, preferring to concentrate on their Tanzanian gold properties. Canadian Kansai Mining Corporation are undertakijng a due diligence study over Mid Migori Mining Company Ltd’s exploration portfolio in the Migori region. In 2004 Kansai Mining reported that gold resource at the Migori gold project had increased from 750,000 ounces to 1,238,000 ounces.
Golden Star Resources is active in the Lake Victoria Goldfields, near the shore of Lake Victoria on the Ndori property. The property is on care and maintenance and the company is seeking partners. Artisinal (alluvial) gold production is common.
