Overview
Gold mining is the major mining sector in Ethiopia. Manganese ore and platinum are also mined.
The number of foreign mining exploration companies operating in Ethiopia has increased from one in 1994 to more than a dozen. Mining income tax has been reduced from 45% to 35% and the level of free government participation has been reduced from 10% to 2%.

The country has potash deposits which have yet to be developed.
Governance
The industry is regulated by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, P O Box 486, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. His Excellency, Izaddin Ali Zikeh is presently the Minister of Mines and Energy.
