NAFCON plays an important role in the economy of Nigeria through the local production of fertilisers which are able to displace expensive imports and save valuable foreign exchange. Ownership of the company is shared between the Nigerian government and M W Kellogg. NAFCON has a role in the the organisation and management of the fertiliser industry and is active in production, distribution and aspects of the marketing of fertilisers. The company owns the largest fertiliser plant in Nigeria which is located at Onne, near Port Harcourt. This plant produces ammonia, urea and mixed NPK fertilsers using natural gas as a feedstock. This makes it an important player in the Nigerian petrochemical industry and a consumer of the output of the oil and gas sector. There have been plans to expand the production capacity of the plant at Ohne to make the country self sufficient in nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilisers.
