Spoornet is a division of Transnet which offers Freight Logistic Solutions. It operates in both the Freight Logistics and Passenger Rail Transport markets in Southern Africa.
Spoornet is the largest heavy haulier and transporter of general freight in the Southern African region with an annual turnover of R8,9 bn (U$1,5 bn) (1999). Its freight business structure includes two specialised business units; COALlink, serving export coal customers on the Richards Bay coal line, and OREX,providing dedicated export iron ore transport on the Sishen-Saldanha line.
In the Domestic Passenger market Spoornet provides transportation to more than 5 million people each year. In 1999 Spoornet outsourced catering, cleaning and training and development to Fedics and BJ’s Fast Foods in a move to privatise the service.
Its flagship luxury Blue Train, designed as a five-star hotel on wheels, was tagged for privatisation in 1999, following the company’s decision to focus on its core business of fright transportation.
Spoornet and Southern Africa initiatives
Spoornet is involved in a number of Southern African initiatives such as:
Maputo Corridor, Spoornet is in discussion with the IDC to transport 4 mt/a of magnetite (over a period of 25 years) from Phalaborwa to Maputo as feedstock for the proposed iron and steel plant at Maputo.
Beitbridge – West Nicholson,
Gauteng Dar Es Salaam corridor, Spoornet has implemented logistics solutions providing non-stop conveyance of freight between South Africa and Tanzania,
Comazar involvement in Africa,The rail organisations of the countries involved, have reached agreement on the operating and marketing specifications to compile a best practice logistical solution for customers.
