Overview
South Africa does not have any primary uranium producers, but does produce uranium oxide as a by product from some Witwatersrand gold mines. South Africa produced 900,765 kg of uranium oxide in 2003. Most of South Africa’s production is sourced from the Moab Khotsong Gold mine operated by Anglo Gold. Uraninite is found associated with the auriferous Witwatersrand conglomerates as well as in carbonatitic intrusions such as Phalaborwa. Uraninite is also found associated with certain Karoo age sediments. The Witwatersrand conglomerates and tailings contain up to 80% of South Africa’s resources, estimated at 284 000t of uranium.
